Pooja songs

For the Bengali, the Durga Puja is cause for wild festivities and extravagant indulgences, a time of the year which could compare with the Diwali of the Non-Bengalis.
Tradition has it that Artistes and Musicians release their albums & singles just before the Pujas, to add to the gaiety of the festival and also to cash in, no pun intended, on the extravagance of the splurging Bengalis. When Rahul Dev Burman made an appearance on the scene, the music world was already saturated for the discerning listener. Salil Chowdhury, Hemanta Mukherjee, Shyamal Mitra and many others ruled the Bengali heart. Slowly and steadily, Rahul Dev Burman made his presence felt – first with Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar (and Amit Kumar) and then with Asha Bhonsle. His partnership with Asha Bhonsle rivaled the legendary Salil Chowdhury-Lata Mangeshkar partnership, and between the four of them, produced much of the best music of modern Bengal. An out-of-work (by his standards) and disillusioned Rahul Dev Burman returned to the Bangla Puja scene after a gap of almost three years with two albums with Usha Uthup and Indrani Sen in 1993. They were to be his last. |
Note
Most of the earlier songs were released in 78 rpms & 45 rpm EPs – and would be extremely difficult to get. Most of the songs however have found their way into subsequent albums released as Puja Albums during his life-time and posthumously. I’ve sorted the songs based on singers and the links on the left will take you to their respective songs/albums. |

Rahul Dev Burman’s last puja album in Bangla for HMV was Ga Pa Ga Re Sa in 1990, which sadly didn’t do well enough, even though the songs in that album were magnificent. After a three year gap, Biswanath Chatterjee of Concord Records contacted RD for a puja album with Usha Uthup (Preme Pore Jai).
Indrani had already been remaking RD’s songs in Bangla for her puja albums. Her Puja album of 1991 released by Concord Records had remakes of some RD numbers. Probably her 1993 puja album was planned along the same lines. With RD joining the concord team for Usha’s album (which had all previously unreleased tunes), it was suggested that he add a few original numbers to the Indrani album as well, so that this album gets released as an original puja album rather than a remake album. So, while some songs are absolute remakes of old Pancham hits (like Beeti Na Beetai Raina (Parichay), Humen Tumse Pyar Kitna (Kudrat), a few songs are absolutely new. Following RD’s death in January 1994, this album was re-released – incorporating clips of RD singing some songs in his own way. Indrani Sen, in her other releases, recorded many RD tunes with the same arranger, Amit Banerjee. The ones I have come across are listed on her page in the ‘Remakes’ section of this site. |

EP No. 2067-679
S.P. Balasubramanium has to his credit one song “Paathshaalate Indoor Elo” – which was released by MIL as a “Puja” number in 1983. While that is the factual position, it is really whether this song really deserves a place in the basic bangla songs category of R.D.Burman. The song was originally recorded for and belonged to the Hindi movie Subhkaamna (1983) and is a comedy number, sung partly in Bengali and partly in Hindi. taking advantage of the Bengali content of the song, it was released as an EP as a special “Puja” release.
If this song is included and counted in the basic Bengali songs category (like Nerurkar has done in his book) gives the wrong picture because the song already exists in the Hindi movie catalog of Pancham. The same song is being counted twice.
Hence, I have included the song as a Puja release and it finds a mention in this page of this section, without counting it in the basic Bengali songs list.
This section lists those compilations which have the original RD tracks – not remakes and remixes. Most of them were released after Rahul Dev passed away in 1994. There might be more I am not aware of. The video released by Angel Video is also listed here.

While Panchami Surey was a bengali remake (a tribute to RD from Asha) of some of RD’s popular songs from hindi films, the other album “Sangite Aachho Tumi was a remake of a remix album. Asha Bhosle joined the remix brigade with Rahul & I, apparently distressed that others, mainly Bally Sagoo, were remixing songs which were originally hers. Sagoo’s version of Chura Liya started a Remix era and RD’s songs has been the most popular choices for the remixes. Asha teamed up with Leslie Lewis, the talented son of dance director P.L.Raj, and the double album “Rahul & I” was born. The popularity of the album prompted the remix album “Rahul & I” to be remade in Bengali – and “Sangite Aachho Tumi” was released as a single album.
